Marion D. Schoneman, 91, of Thornton, IA, passed away peacefully on Monday, March 14, 2016, at Hospice of North Iowa in Mason City. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 19, 2016, at Richland Lutheran Church in Thornton with Rev. Robert Harting presiding. Interment is to follow at Richland Lutheran Cemetery, Thornton, with Military Honors by Anton Juhl Post #440 American Legion. Visitation will be from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday at Retz Funeral Home, 207 N. 2nd Street, Thornton. Memorials may be directed to the family or made based on the donor’s choice.

Marion Denny Schoneman was born July 8, 1924, on the family farm near Britt, IA, to Bert and Hannah (Heimendinger) Schoneman. He was baptized in the Methodist Church and graduated from Garner High School in 1945. While in high school, he worked in his families café in Garner.

Marion served proudly as an Iowa State patrolman three years before entering the U.S. Army. While on leave, he was united in marriage with Pauline (Polly) Schonemann (of Thornton) on December 24, 1950, at Richland Lutheran Church in Thornton.

After his discharge from the Army, Marion and Polly moved to a farm near Thornton where they raised their daughter Pamela. He enjoyed raising hogs and cattle and leading a 4-H club. In 1983, they moved into Thornton, but Marion continued farming for several more years.

Marion and Polly were avid Iowa State Cyclone fans and attended home football games for 35 years where they enjoyed tailgating and fellowship with friends and family.

Marion was a long time member of Richland Lutheran Church where he currently served as a Deacon; in addition, he held many other church offices over the years. He was a member of the American Legion Post in Thornton and was very proud that all five boys in his family were veterans. He was also a charter member of the Thornton Lions Club. A devoted great-grandfather, grandfather, father and husband, Marion would travel every day to the care center in Garner, even during questionable weather, to be with his beloved Polly. He loved cooking fried chicken and sticky popcorn for his family, singing in church and along with Pam’s guitar playing, having coffee with his brothers, and displaying his patriotism proudly.

Surviving family members include his wife of 65 years, Polly Schoneman, Concord Care Center, Garner; daughter, Pam (Craig) Deuel, Worthington, MN; granddaughters, Sara (Josh) Pruss and their children, Josie and Ike; and Abbey (Brandon) Johnson, all of Omaha, NE; brother, Marvin Schoneman, Garner; sister, Betty Brugman, Pipestone, MN; sister-in-law, Lora Mae Schoneman, Garner; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Judie and Larry Lightbody, Thornton; foreign exchange daughter, Sara Stenlund, Kelleftehamn, Sweden; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Marion is preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Maynard, Bill and Merlin.
