OWATONNA — Richard Lee Moore, 82, of Owatonna peacefully passed away Saturday, Aug. 10, 2013, at Highland Senior Living in Little Falls, Minn.

Richard was born Aug. 28, 1930, in Macomb, Ill., the son of Lyell and Patricia (Peck) Moore, and was raised by Lyell and Mildred (Marshall) Moore after Lyell married Mildred. Richard moved to Mason City, Iowa, in 1940 and graduated from Mason City High School in 1949.

After graduation, he served four years in the Navy at Point Mugu Guided Missile Station in California, and served on the island of Guam. Richard was honorably discharged from the Navy in 1954 when he returned to Mason City and worked for Western Electric installing dial phone systems in towns around Iowa until 1958. Richard then enrolled in mechanical drafting school in Minneapolis and began work in the engineering department at Oliver Tractor Company in Charles City, Iowa in 1960 where he met, and later married his love Charlene Kay Lemons on July 15, 1962.

Richard, and his family, moved to Owatonna, Minnesota in 1970 when he began to work as a design engineer at Truth Hardware. He later worked in the manufacturing engineering department as a cost estimator and project coordinator. Richard worked at Truth until his retirement in 1992. In order to keep his life busy and add to his social life, Richard worked part time at Hy-Vee grocery store in Owatonna at the drive up/packing area and worked in the specialty meat department until 1999.

Richard was a life-long member of the United Methodist Church of Owatonna serving on various church committees, a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Order of Eastern Star, the American Legion, the American Legion Grandfather Club, and served on the Owatonna Memorial Gardens Cemetery Board. Richard enjoyed traveling with his wife, Charlene, and friends from Iowa prior to his wife’s death, working on his house and yard, leather tooling, woodworking, golfing, volunteering when needed, and spending time with family, grandchildren, and great friend, Scooter, his terrier pet dog of 16 years. Richard also enjoyed paint by numbers paintings and accomplished over thirty wonderful paintings over his final years.

Richard is survived by his daughter, Gail Moore of Owatonna, Minn.; son, Michael and wife Cheryl Moore and two grandsons, Tyler and Austin Moore of Little Falls, Minn.; brother, William and wife Marcene Moore of Mason City, Iowa; niece, Ranae and husband Bret Chizek of Mount Horeb, Wis.; and nephew, Greg and wife Jenny Moore with children Marshall and Delaney Moore of Bondurant, Iowa.

Richard was preceded in death by his father, Lyell; stepmother, Mildred; mother, Patricia; stepfather, Skip; and loving wife of 35 years, Charlene on July 4, 1997.

Visitation will be at Michaelson Funeral Home on Wednesday, Aug. 14, from 4 to 7 p.m. and at United Methodist Church on Thursday from 10 to 11 a.m. A masonic service will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Aug. 15, at 11 a.m. at United Methodist Church with the Rev. Loren Olson officiating. Interment will be in the Owatonna Memorial Gardens in Owatonna with military honors by the Steele County Military Funeral Unit. Memorials are preferred to American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, Alzheimer’s Association, or donor’s choice.
