February 11, 1996Edward L. Meade, 74, of Mason City, formerly of Denver, Iowa, died Friday morning (Feb. 9, 1996) of cancer at his home in Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 12, at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Denver, with burial in the church cemetery. Graveside flag folding rites will be conducted by Acker-Matthias Post 653.
Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Schumacher Funeral Home, Denver, and one hour prior to service time Monday at the church.
A memorial fund has been established in his name.
Edward L. Meade was born Dec. 2, 1921, in Center Junction, the son of Louis J. and Amanda L. (Hunwardsen) Meade. Ed lost his mother as a baby and lived with his grandparents until he was 8 years old. He then moved to Sumner with his dad when he remarried. He graduated from Sumner High School in 1940. He married Phyllis Schuldt on Jan. 17, 1943, in Rochester, N.Y., and she died on Sept. 15, 1988. He then married Wanda M. Brown on Oct. 6, 1990, in Mason City.
Ed served during World War II in the U.S. Navy from August 1942 to November 1945 as a storekeeper. He moved to Denver in 1959 where he obtained a job at Waterloo Industries as a maintenance supervisor. He retired on July 1, 1984.
He was a 50-year member of Acker-Matthias American Legion Post 653 of Denver and served on the Denver City Countil from 1964-68. He loved to golf, fish, hunt and did a great deal of visiting with his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Wanda, of Mason City; one son, Joel Meade and wife, Marilyn, of LeMars; one daughter, Mary and husband, Carl J. Schnakenberg, of Chicago, Ill.; one brother, Thomas Meade of Saunderstown, R.I.; and five grandchildren, Kurt, Peter, and Kate Schnakenberg, Thomas and Colin Meade.
He was preceded in death by two infant children, Mark and Margaret.
