September 30, 2000ROCKWELL - Susan L. "Lou" Sturges, 98, of Rockwell, died early Thursday afternoon 28 Sept 2000) at the Rockwell Community Nursing Home.
The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Rockwell United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Bruce E. Wittern officiating. Interment will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Church Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Fullerton Funeral Home, 120 S. Third St. in Rockwell. Visitation will continue one hour prior to services on Monday at the church.
Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the Susan Sturges Memorial Fund.
Susan was born on 20 Oct 1901, in Rockwell, the daughter of William D. and Ida Mae (Piersol) Gibson. She is a lifelong resident of Rockwell, attending the Rockwell public schools and later graduating from La James Beauty School in Mason City. For many years she operated with her partner the Lu-Raine Beauty Shop in Rockwell.
On 8 May 1918, she was united in marriage to Martin M. Treston and to this union were born two children. Martin preceded her in death on 20 May 1964. She later married Hugh F. Coyle on 15 Oct 1965. He also preceded her in death on 14 Dec 1970. Leonard "Pat" Sturges and Lou were married on 19 Dec 1972. He passed away on 29 Apr 1994.
Susan "Lou" was a very active member of the Rockwell United Methodist Church, and the United Methodist Women, of which she served as president. She was a former member of the Rockwell Chamber of Commerce and was honored as a long time member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a devoted and loving member of her family and was always seen active in events in and around Rockwell.
Those thankful in sharing Lou's life include her daughter, Margaret and her husband, Cecil J. McMonagle, of Mason City; her daughter-in-law, Phyllis Treston, of Rockwell; one stepdaughter, Donna and her husband, Morris Billings, of Mobridge, SD; two stepsons, Jay and his wife, Ellen Sturges, and Robert and his wife, Jane Sturges, all of Rockwell; one stepdaughter-in-law, Billie Sturges, of Des Moines; one stepson-in-law, Darrel Schmock, of Fontana, CA; three granddaughters, Sherry Treston, of Hinsdale, IL, Shirley and her husband Vance Severson, of La Porte City, and Sheila and her husband, Jay Boyle, of Vancouver, WA; seven great-grandchildren, Adam, Alicia, Andrew, Jacob, Aaron, Tai Li, and Kai Mei; 28 stepgrandchildren; 32 stepgreat-grandchildren; and eight stepgreat-great-grandchildren; one nephew, Robert and his wife, Marjorie Gibson; and one niece, Alwilda Kramer, all of Mason City.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands; one son, Martin D. Treston; one granddaughter, Denise Treston; one brother, Elmer Gibson; two sisters, Echo Huntbatch, and Ruth Gibson; one stepson, Wendell Sturges; and one stepdaughter, June Schmock.
