David Frederick Sturges was born January 27, 1960, in Mason City, the second son to Patricia Ann (Radcliff) and Harley Patrick Sturges. He enjoyed tinkering on old cars, riding his dirt bikes and was known for his comical nature during his high school years.
David graduated from Rockwell-Swaledale High School in 1978. Following high school, he was employed as a welder at David’s Manufacturing and Seabee’s.
David lived all his life in the Rockwell area and was a former member of the Moose Lodge in Mason City.
Tammy Vorce and David were united in marriage and two children, Amanda and Joseph were born. The couple later divorced.
In 1988, David married Mary Etta Petersen. They became the proud parents of their son, Ryan.
David purchased his first dump truck in 1993 and developed his own company, “Dave Sturges Trucking.” He flourished as an independent contractor, mostly hauling asphalt and farming on his family’s farm, following his father’s retirement.
David treasured his leisure time. He found great pleasure in spending time with his children, motorcycling, ice fishing, and rebuilding and reconditioning older cars. His most recent project was the completion of a 1967 Nova, which he proudly drove.
Ryan has fond memories of many fun times "hanging out" with his dad. Some of those recollections include: riding with him in the tractor on the farm, tagging along in David’s dump truck and attending the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) funny cars and drag races at Brainerd, Minn.
Amanda treasures her father’s sense of humor and the time privately spent with Dave following the birth of her son, Justice, a few months ago.
Joseph (Joe) recalls the wonderful bond he had with his dad as they worked daily side-by-side, many times so closely that they would complete each other’s sentences. This past Wednesday, the two of them returned to Rockwell after spending several days at the motorcycle rally in Sturgis, S.D. Dave rode his 1992 black and purple Harley Glide Soft-tail and Joe, his 1999 Harley Sportster. Dave will be missed dearly by all who have shared in his life.
He is survived by his daughter, Amanda Cassady and her husband, Tim, of Welka, Fla.; his two sons, Joseph and Ryan Sturges, both of Rockwell; his mother, Patricia Sturges of Mason City; his father, Harley Sturges and his wife, Shirley, of Rockwell; his brother, Brian Sturges of Rockwell; and his two grandchildren, Benjamin Althof of Mason City, and Justice Cassady of Welka, Fla. Numerous other relatives and friends will also sadly miss him.
Preceding Dave in death were his grandparents.
