RITES AT FERTILE FOR MRS. MASONER
MANY YEARS RESIDENT OF COMMUNITY; SERVICES HELD APRIL 12

Funeral services for Mrs. Emma Masoner, 79, were held Wednesday afternoon at 1 o’clock at the Mervin Stevens home and at 2 o’clock at the Christian church in Fertile with the Rev. S.L. Schuler in charge. Burial was in the Clear Lake cemetery.

Mrs. Masoner died Easter Sunday morning at the Stevens home, Mrs. Stevens being her granddaughter. Mrs. Masoner had suffered a fall on Oct. 26, 1938, which resulted in the fracture of one hip. She was in the Park hospital in Mason City for five weeks following the accident and was them brought to the Stevens home where she was cared for by her daughter and granddaughter.

Emma Grace Miller, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. William Miller, was born in Utica, Mo., on Jan. 18, 1860. After the death of her father, when she was three years old, she and her mother came to Worth county, residing here for 11 years. On the death of her mother she went to California and made her home with an aunt, Miss Phoebe Miller, completing her schooling while there.

Ehen she was 18 years of age she returned to Iowa and taught school until her marriage to J. M. Masoner on Dec. 21, 1881. Mr. and Mrs. Masoner were residents of the Fertile-Hanlontown community for 56 years. Since the death of Mr. Masoner in December, 1937, she had lived with her daughter, Mrs. Aubra Orcutt, and granddaughter, Mrs. Stevens. One daughter, Grace, died in infancy.

While residing at Hanlontown Mrs. Masoner served as postmaster for several years. She was a lifelong member of the Methodist church and helped to organize the first Sunday School in Hanlontown, serving as superintendent and teacher for many years. Though rather frail in body, Mrs. Masoner was always active in community matters.

Those serving as pallbearers at her funeral services were E. E. Ronglin, J. M. Knutson, Henry Dobel, T. O. Thovson, Mons, Monson and W. J. Loveless, all of Hanlontown.

Transcriber’s Note – Emma Grace Masoner was born January 18, 1860, died April 1939 and was buried in the Clear Lake Cemetery Section E Row 8.
