KEITH ERNEST MCGOWAN

Former Clear Lake resident Keith E. McGowan, age 67, of 5644 Newman Drive, Port Orange, Florida, died of cancer following an illness of two years.

Mr. McGowan was born April 12, 1912, in Clear Lake to Will and Ethel McGowan. He operated a hardware store in Clear Lake until he and his wife Ruth moved to Daytona Beach, Florida, where they managed Perry’s Ocean Edge Motel from 1967 through 1977.

Mr. McGowan was president of the Iowa Fireman’s Association from 1953 through 1954. In Clear Lake he was on the city council for two years, president of the Clear Lake Lions Club and fire chief for nine years. He was voted Man of the Year in 1949.

In Daytona Beach, Mr. McGowan was an active member of Christ the King Lutheran Church, president of the Daytona Beach Laryngectomee Association and a member of the Volusia Cancer Society.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth; a daughter, Pat Hoyt of Garner; two sons, Bill of Des Moines and Ted McGowan of Huntsville, Alabama; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by brothers Jay, Dale and Neil.

Funeral services were held in Zion Lutheran Church on Tuesday, April 24. The Rev. Murley A. Severtson officiated. Organist was Mrs. A.E. Folkmann. Interment was in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers were Nibbs Nesbit, Joe Jensen, Edward R. Boyle, Donald O’Neill, V.N. Minette and Crosby Ingersoll.

Pallbearers were Dick Scott, Pat Stork, Emmett Hoyt, Robert Chizek, Donald Huey and Marshall Friest.

Arrangements were by the Ward Van Slyke Colonial Chapel.
