Obituary - Dennis L. Abrams
May 27, 1937 ~ October 17, 2013

Dennis L. Abrams, 76, of Ames, formerly of Mason City died suddenly Thursday (October 17, 2013) of natural causes, in Dubuque.

A funeral service will be held 2:30 p.m. Monday (October 21, 2013) at Hogan-Bremer-Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 3rd Street NE, Mason City. Inurnment will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, where full military honors will be conducted by the Mason City Veterans.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral chapel.

Dennis L. Abrams was born May 27, 1937 at Thornton, a son of Orville and Viola (Waggoner) Abrams. He was united in marriage to Betty Brown, on August 1, 1956 at Thornton.

He attended Thornton schools and was a graduate of Thornton High School. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the aircraft carrier, USS Leyte, along with his brother, Bob.

Following his discharge, Dennis and Betty made their home in Mason City, raising two children, Kelly and Lori. Dennis worked at Mason City Furniture, McGregors Furniture, and at Key Wholesale for 35 years.

In 1980 the Abrams moved to Ames. For the past nine years, Dennis worked as a product specialist for B. P. I. of Iowa, Inc..

Dennis's life was centered on his family. His granddaughters were his greatest source of joy. He enjoyed golf and traveling in his 2000 American Dream motor home. He was passionate about all forms of dirt car racing, especially winged sprint car racing. He loved to watch his favorite driver, "Slammin" Sammy Swindell.

He was very proud of his 1956 Chevy-Bel Air and his 1932 Ford-three window coupe- with a rumble seat.

He held memberships in the VFW and the Elk's Lodge. He was a founding member of River City Street Rods.

Dennis is survived by his wife, Betty Abrams, Ames; son, Kelly Abrams, Mason City; son-in-law, Kurt Lichty, Mason City; granddaughters, Jonna (Justin) Rasmusson, Menifee, CA, Kyla Lichty, Cedar Falls, Alexis Lichty, Cedar Rapids, Brooke Lichty, Iowa City; a sister, Dolores McLaughlin, Mason City; brothers, Robert (Nancy) Abrams, Escondido, CA, Clifton (Betty) Abrams, Apache Junction, AZ, and Dallas (Elaine) Abrams, Menifee, CA; .

He was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Lori Lichty; brother-in-law, LaVerne McLaughlin; nephew, Joe McLaughlin; niece, Patty Siskow.
