GUSTAVE “GUS” E. PUNKE
CLEAR LAKE -- Gustave “Gus” E. Punke, 91, of 22728 Gull Avenue, died Friday (Aug. 20, 1993) at the North Iowa Mercy Health Center, east campus, Mason City.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church, 508 Second Ave. N., Clear Lake, with the Rev. Fred Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Lincoln Township Cemetery.
Visitation will begin at 3 p.m. Sunday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake. Masonic services will be held 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
The family suggests memorials to the Clear Lake United Methodist Church.
Gustave E. Punke was born June 18, 1902, in Gridley, Ill., the son of Gustave and Lucinda (Peck) Punke. He moved to Corwith in 1929 to join his cousins in a farming business there. In 1929 he moved to Mason City and was employed by the Standard Oil Co. Distribution Center until 1945.
On June 10, 1934, he married Alma Davis. They made their home in Clear Lake until 1945 when the moved to a farm north of Clear Lake. They have lived on the present farm since 1945.
He was a member of the Clear Lake United Methodist Church and Verity Masonic lodge.
During the years he served as a school board member for the Lincoln Township No. 7 school. He was an assistant 4-H leader for Lincoln Township, a member of the farm Bureau, Clear Lake Shipping Association, Extension Council, Farmers Home Administration Committee, U.S. Soil Conservation Committee, the Farmers Co-op Association Board and the North Iowa Fair Board.
He enjoyed gardening and rock polishing. He also was a member of the North Iowa Rock Club.
Survivors include two sons, David of Nevada, Iowa, and Joel of Clear Lake; his brother, Theodore, El Paso, Ill.; three grandsons, Chris of Clear Lake, Steven and James, both of Nevada, Iowa; and one granddaughter, Michele, Clear Lake.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alma (Davis) Punke, in April 1001; his parents, two brothers and five sisters.
