Mason City Soldier Dies in Morocco

Pvt. Stanley A. Arneson, 27, son of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence O. Arneson, 616 Monroe, N. W., died in Morocco, North Africa, on Sept. 22, according to a message received by his parents from the war department.

The exact cause of Pvt. Arneson's death is unknown at this time, the message stated, adding that a letter containing further details will be forwarded at the earliest possible date. The telegram also stated that information concerning the return of Pvt. Arneson's remains to this country would be sent soon.

Pvt. Arneson first enlisted in the air force from Devil's Lake, N. Dak., 1942, where his family then lived. They came to Mason City about 5 years ago. He served in World War II for almost 5 years. After his discharge he was employed in Mason City. He was called back from the reserves last May.

After being in Texas for training he was shipped to Morocco in July. His work consisted of driving vehicles at the air force base there.

Pvt. Arneson Services Set for Tuesday

Funeral services for Pvt. Stanley A. Arneson, 27, who died in Morocco, North Africa, Sept. 27, will be held at 2:30 p. m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran church, with the Rev. Alvin N. Rogness, pastor of Trinity Lutheran church, officiating.

Pvt. Arneson was born Jan. 10, 1924, at Devil's Lake, N. Dak. He attended grade and high school there, and Shattuck Military school at Farihault, Minn. In October, 1942, he enlisted in the U. S. Army Air Corps.

During his service he was overseas in Japan, and in March, 1947, was discharged to the active reserves. He was recalled to active duty in March, 1951. He was a member of the V. F. W., San Juan Marne Post No. 733.

Surviving are his parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. O. Arneson, 616 Monroe N. W., Mason City, a brother, Charles Arneson, Tallulah, La., and a sister, Miss Burnette Arneson, Hollywood, Calif.

Interment will be at Elmwood cemetery. The Major funeral home is in charge of services.

Pvt. Arneson Services Held

Military Rites Are Conducted at Grave
Funeral services for Pvt. Stanley A. Arneson, 27, who died in Morocco, North Africa, Sept. 22, were held at Trinity Lutheran church Tuesday afternoon, with the Rev. Alvin N. Rogness, pastor, officiating.

Clayton Wornson sang two selections with Konrad Hagen at the organ.

Pallbearers were Duane Fjone, Jerry Sanbert, Jimmy Bountas, Roger Kingland, Arnold Arneson and Richard Arneson.

Military services were conducted at Elmwood cemetery, with Major Jack Baugh of Headquarters company, Iowa national guard, in charge of the military detail. John Payton was the bugler.

The firing squad consisted of M/Sgt. Emory Anderson, Sgt. Richard Wolfe, M/Sgt. Gabriel Marroni, Sgt. Walter Gaffney, Cpl. Paul Gugel, all of the national guard.

Flagholders were M/Sgt Bernard Coburn, U. S. army instructor, Sgt. 1/c Robert Barr, of the Mason City recruiting office, M/Sgt. Cedric Connelly and Sgt. 1/c John Christensen, Iowa national guard.

Pfc. Charles C. Turner, Westover Air Force base, Massachusetts, was the escort who presented the flag.

Veterans organizations represented were the V.F.W., Jacob Magnani and Harold Schnarr, color bearers; James Edgington and Dick O'Brien, color guards; American Legion, S. J. Patterson and John Brown, color guard; Edward Babcock and John Hrubetz, color bearers.

Legion Auxiliary, Mrs. Willis Bemiss and Mrs. Harold Weignad, color bearers; Amvets, Ervin Moss and Hubert Cabell, color bearers; Amvets Auxiliary, Mrs. Metta Read, color bearer.

The Major funeral home was in charge.
