NEVER REGAINED CONSCIOUSNESS

The death of Hayes Burzette was a great surprise to his friends and relatives. He left here a year ago this spring, going to Minnesota to work with a railroad construction gang. Probably he kept at this kind of work until his death which occurred at Belle, Mo., 105 miles from St. Louis, on Monday March 3rd. He belonged to a steam shovel gang and very little is known of the facts leading up to his death, except what is said in a letter received from one of the men working with him. This man writes that Hayes “was riding on the dump cars hauling water across the trestle and the cars went over the side and took him with them. He fell about 20 feet striking on his head.” He never regained consciousness and died thirteen hours afterwards.

The remains were brought to Clear Lake for burial, and funeral services were held in the Congregational church Wednesday afternoon March 5th.

Deceased was born in Rockford, this state, in 1876. He was the son of Clark Burzette of Clear Lake. Six brothers survive him and one sister, Mrs. Elmer McClement.

Transcriber’s Note – Hayes Burzette was born 1876 and died March 3, 1902.
