JAMES DUANE GROATH

CLEAR LAKE – James “Duey” Duane Groath, 59, of Clear Lake, died Saturday (Nov. 9, 1991) at St. Mary’s Hospital, Rochester, Minn., following surgery.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Murley Severtson officiating.

Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, with military honors by Clear Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4868.

Friends may call after 5 p.m. today at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, and one hour prior to service time on Tuesday at the church.

Memorial contributions may be given to Zion Lutheran Church, Mayo Clinic Foundation or the American Heart Association in memory of James “Duey” Groath.

James Duane Groath was born May 25, 1932, at Forest City, the son of James M. and Doris L. (Ellefson Legreid) Groath. He was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake. He attended and graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1950. Upon his graduation from high school, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1951 where he served aboard the carrier U.S.S. Tarawa, serving his country in the Korean Conflict and also on a world tour aboard ship. After his honorable discharge from the Navy in 1954, he attended and graduated from North Iowa Area Community College, Mason City.

He was united in marriage to Patricia Patton on Oct. 14, 1956, at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, Mason City.

Mr. Groath owned and operated several small businesses and was a real estate agent for First Northern Realty Company, Clear Lake, for several years and until the time of his death, was a sales representative for Hewett Wholesale Company, Mason City.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Clear Lake.

Survivors include his wife, Patricia A. Groath of Clear Lake, two daughters, Kim M. and her husband, Jay Kvigne, Mason City, and Debra K. Groath, Clear Lake; one son, Steven G. Groath and his wife, Juli, St. Charles, Ill.; his mother, Doris Legreid, Clear Lake; a half sister, Betty Jean Rust, Goldfield; one grandson, Ben Stealy, Mason City; two aunts and uncles, Sid and Marge Ellefson and Bob and Maudalia Ellefson, all of Algona; as well as other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, James M. Groath and his stepfather, Clifford S. Legreid.
