LOIS P. HUGHES

Lois P. Hughes, 75, 414 N. Fourth St., died Friday, March 24, at home of natural causes.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. today, Wednesday, March 29, at the First Congregational Church, 915 Second Place N., Clear Lake, with John Fonkert, lay minister at Wesley United Methodist Church, officiating. Burial will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to the Lois P. Hughes Memorial Fund.

She was born Feb. 5, 1914, in Austin, Minn., to Earl C. and Gladys (Jones) Padelford. She graduated from Austin High School in 1932 and Carlton College in Northfield, Minn., in 1936. She did post-graduate work at the University of Minnesota, Drake University, Colorado State University, Iowa State University and San Francisco State University. She began teaching in 1936 in Adams, Minn.

On Feb. 25, 1939, she was married to Melville W. “Bud” Hughes at Clarion. She started teaching in 1959 at the Ventura High School, where she taught English, speech, drama and mass media. She retired in 1979.

She was a member of the First Congregational Church of Clear Lake, Today’s Club, Chapter E.A., P.E.O., Woman’s Club and the American Mothers Association. She was a life member of the Iowa State Education Association and National Education Association; a member of the Iowa Council Teachers of English, National Council Teachers of English, International Reading Council and Speech Association of America; past president of the Clear Lake PTA and Cerro Gordo County Republican Women; and was an Iowa Merit Mother.

Survivors include her husband, Melville W. “Bud” Hughes, Clear Lake; four sons, M. P. Hughes, Novato, Calif., Justin Russell Hughes, Naples, Italy, Alan Danforth Hughes, Minneapolis, and Craig Barnell Hughes, San Diego, Calif.; her mother, Mrs. Gladys Padelford, Austin, Minn.; and eight grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father.

Pallbearers were Bob Halford, Bob Ingersoll, Jim Connell, Tom Nelson, Tom Lovell and Tom Joslyn. Organist was Pat Treloar and Sue Roenfanz was the pianist.
