METHODIST MINISTER SUCCUMBS

CLEAR LAKE – The Rev. Joseph Charles Warton, 83, a retired Methodist minister, died Monday afternoon at a Mason City hospital after an illness. He was taken from his home at 2615 S. Lake View Drive several days ago to the hospital. Ward’s Funeral Home is in charge of funeral arrangements.

Mr. Warton received his education in England, coming to Canada as a young man as a territorial missionary (circuit rider) settling in Saskatchewan. He came to the United States in 1910, serving his first parish in the Methodist Church Upper Iowa Conference at Guttenberg. He later had Methodist pastorates at Lansing, St. Ansgar, Dubuque and Center Grove.

He was married to Luella Schlitz and they lived in Masonville, Fredricksburg, East Dubuque, Ill., Epworth, Elgin and Geneseo.

He retired from the ministry in June 1949 after 47 years of preaching when they settled in their present home at Clear Lake.

Mr. Wharton was born April 4, 1875 at Staffordshire County, England, one of 13 children of Joshua and Lucy Warton.

Surviving are his wife, one son, John, Clear Lake; one daughter, Mrs. W. H. Schambaugh, Des Moines, and seven grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Methodist Church. Dr. John DeLong and Dr. Herbert Temple, Fort Dodge, who was associated with him in the ministry for many years, will officiate. Burial will be in Clear Lake Cemetery.
