JESS R. BUTTLEMAN
Funeral services for Jess R. Buttleman, 73, 110 N. 8th St., were held Jan. 31 at the Zion Lutheran Church at 2:30 p.m. The Rev. George Strum officiated. Mr. Buttleman died in a Mason City hospital where he had been for 17 days.
Paul Fynskov was soloist and Mrs. Holmes Pedelty was organist. Pallbearers were Eugene Meier, Clifford Coffin, Paul Callanan, Donald Goranson, Robert Buck, and Lawrence Secory. Burial was in Clear Lake Cemetery. Wilcox Funeral Home was in charge.
Jess R. Buttleman was born Jan. 6, 1893 in Oceana County, Mich., the son of George and Augusta (Lauterberg) Buttleman. He has been a resident of Clear Lake 41 years.
During World War I he served with the Air Service in France, being discharged as a sergeant July 12, 1919.
He attended schools at Lowden and barber school at Davenport. He was a barber at Clarence and established a shop at Lowden before moving to Clear Lake in 1925, purchasing the Royal Barber Shop. He was married to Gladys Marken Sept 17, 1926 at Albert Lea, Minn.
He joined the police force in 1935 serving as an officer and chief of police, resigning in 1949. He then worked as a barber in Ventura, Sheffield and Thornton and established a shop on N. 8th St.
Mr. Buttleman served as justice of the peace eight years. During World War II he was chairman of the ration board for the west half of Cerro Gordo County and was employed by E.M. Duesenberg Construction Co. on the Alcan Highway.
He was commander of World War II Veterans; a charter member of San Juan-Marne VFW Post 733, Mason City; member of the American Legion, 40 & 8, Odd Fellows and Zion Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife, Gladys, four sons, Dale, Daytona Beach, Fla.; Duane, Lowden; George, St. Paul, and Edward, Milbrae, Calif.; 13 grandchildren and two great grandchildren; two sisters, Mabel Kroll and Mrs. Garritt (Nina) Westfield, Montague, Mich.
