CLARA ATKINSON

Clara Pemberton Atkinson, 96, of Clear Lake, a lifelong Cerro Gordo County resident, died July 17, in a Mason City hospital after a short illness.

She was born August 11, 1885 on the family farm south of Clear Lake in Lake Township. Her parents, Henry and Emma Daker, were early settlers who came to the Clear Lake area in 1874.

She was graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1903. On June 5, 1905, she was married to Walter Atkinson. They farmed their entire married life south of Baker’s Corner.

Shortly after Mr. Atkinson’s death on Dec. 17, 1955, Mrs. Atkinson made her home with her daughter, L. Fern Nickerson. She later moved to Prairie View in Garner, and two years ago became a resident of Oakwood Manor, Clear Lake.

In addition to her daughter, Mrs. Atkinson is survived by seven grandchildren; Walter Nickerson, Mason City; Richard Nickerson, Clear Lake; Clara Mae Vietor, Walnut Creek, Calif.; Donald Nickerson, Petaluma, Calif.; Ruth Wuintus, Isanti, Minn.; Arlene Olson, Charles City; and Pauline Krukow, Pleasanton, Calif.

She is also survived by 20 great-grandchildren, 13 great-great grandchildren and three nieces; Vivian Walls, Clear Lake; Eva Alder, Forest City; and Ruth Pierson, San Jose, Calif.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Frank and Charles Daker; a grandson Gerald Nickerson; and a great-granddaughter, Jill Nickerson.

Services for Mrs. Atkinson were held July 20 at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, with the Rev. Lyle Lieder of the Clear Lake United Methodist Church officiating. Burial was in Clear Lake Cemetery. The Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
