CARL ASHLAND
CLEAR LAKE – Carl Ashland, 79, of rural Clear Lake, died Tuesday (Jan. 26, 1988) at a Mason City Hospital.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Galilean Lutheran Church, Highway 18 West, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Lowell R. Hennigs officiating. Burial will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery.
Visitation is after 3 p.m. today at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake. The family requests memorials be made to the Carl Ashland Memorial Fund.
He was born March 5, 1908, in rural Clear Lake, the son of Gunder and Julia (Pletan) Ashland.
He received his education in the Hubbard Country School, rural Clear Lake.
He worked on the farm with his father. He later farmed south of Clear Lake for 22 years.
He married Edna Thompson on March 6, 1929, in Mason City. They farmed until the early 1950s. They then built and ran the Lakeview Motel in Clear Lake for nine years. Mr. Ashland also drove a Clear Lake School District bus for 19 years. He also built houses in the Clear Lake area.
Mr. Ashland was a member of Galilean Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, and the National Riflemen’s Association.
Survivors include his wife, Edna, Clear Lake; one daughter, Mrs. Larry (Kathryn) Swanson, Cedar Rapids; two sons, Kenneth, Spirit Lake and Lloyd, Clear Lake; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Christina Rice, Cherry Valley, Ill.
