Obituary - Dr. James Clarence "Jim" Ulum
November 22, 1925 ~ March 25, 2003

FOREST GROVE, Ore. — Dr. James C. Ulum, 78, of Forest Grove, Ore., and formerly of Swaledale, died Thursday morning (March 25, 2004) of age-related causes. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Swaledale United Methodist Church in Swaledale with the Rev. Bruce Wittern officiating. Interment will follow at the Pleasant View Cemetery, Thornton, with Veterans Rites by Anton-Juhl Post 440 American Legion.

Visitation will be 4 to 7 p.m. today at the Retz-Grarup Funeral Home in Thornton.

Dr. James Clarence "Jim" Ulum was born Nov. 22, 1925, in Swaledale, the son of Clarence E. and Esther J. (James) Ulum. He was raised and received his education in the Swaledale community, graduating from Swaledale High School. Jim received his undergraduate degree from Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, and his master's degree and doctorate in education from the University of Iowa in Iowa City. He entered the Navy following high school and retired from the Naval Reserve with the rank of captain.

Jim was united in marriage to Ann Marie Shepherd on June 8, 1952, in LeMars. They made their home in Iowa and Minnesota until 1970, when they moved to Oregon, settling in the North Bend community. They made their home in North Bend for 26 years until 1996, when they moved to Forest Grove.

Jim and Ann celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary this past June.

He had a long career in education in Iowa, Minnesota and Oregon. Jim served as the superintendent of schools in North Bend from 1970 to 1993. Jim was a founding board member and past president of the Confederation of Oregon School Administrators. He was an active member of the Forest Grove United Methodist Church and Rotary International.

Survivors include his wife, Ann Ulum, of Forest Grove, Ore.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Cindy and Mike Reese, of Portland, Ore., and Jenny Ulum and Tim Gleason, of Eugene, Ore.; two sons and daughters-in-law, David and Ann Marie Ulum, of Redmond, Ore., and Christopher and Melissa Ulum of Portland, Ore.; a beloved foster daughter, Barbara Case of Los Angeles; a sister, Jeanne Cole, of Thornton; and nine grandchildren, Alexandra, Rachel and Rebecca Reese; Zachary, Natalie, Jacquelyn, Sam and Andrew Ulum, and Margaret Ann Gleason.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
