Obituary - Bernice Ellen (Smith) Doane
July 05, 1918 ~ August 29, 2006

Bernice Ellen Doane was born July 5, 1918, on a farm southwest of Thornton, to Edd and Alice (Simpson) Smith. They moved to Charles City where she started and finished Washington grade school in 1932. She was baptized and confirmed and joined the Central M.E. Church on May 3, 1931.

In March 1932, her family moved back to the farm in rural Thornton where she was born. She transferred her membership to First United Methodist Church in Thornton. In 1936, she graduated from Thornton High School.

On Feb. 18, 1939, she married Elbert R. Doane in the Methodist parsonage in Hampton and they farmed in the Thornton area.

Bernice was a member of the Thornton Cemetery Society and the First United Methodist Church and the UMW.

She liked flowers and gardening and loved to sew and embroider in her younger years. She enjoyed camping in the western states and spending winters in south Texas several years until her husband became too ill to travel.

[Interment was made at Pleasant View Cemetery, rural Thornton, Iowa.]
