Obituary - Arbun Doane
June 25, 1914 ~ May 14, 2004

THORNTON — Arbun Doane, 89, of Thornton, died Friday (May 14, 2004) at the Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Retz-Grarup Funeral Home in Thornton, with the Rev. Edward Bard officiating. Interment will be in Pleasant View Cemetery in Thornton.

Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Retz-Grarup Funeral Home in Thornton.

Arbun E. Doane was born June 26, 1914, in Shenandoah, the son of Bert and Lillie Brunner Doane. His family moved often. He attended school and graduated from high school. After his schooling, Arbun began farming. On Sept. 12, 1938, Arbun was united in marriage to Sarah Luella in Hickman, Ky. The couple farmed and eventually moved back to the area, settling in Thornton in the early 1940s.

Arbun farmed his entire life, and when he later retired, the couple spent much of their time traveling the country and especially enjoyed spending their winters in Texas.

Arbun built and enjoyed riding his three-wheeled motorcycle. He was a member of Farm Bureau.

He is survived by his daughters, Anna Mae and Kampe Scholte, of Alden, Betty Jane Frye, of Hampton, and Kathleen and Mark Anderson, of Richmond, Va.; six grandchildren; two great-granddaughters; a half-sister, Aletha Short, of Tulare, Calif.; and a sister-in-law, Ruth Doane, of Sheffield.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sarah, on Dec. 31, 1995; his parents; two sons; two brothers and a half-sister.
