Martha Nielsdatter Joh​​​nson was born September 25, 184​2​ at ​Reistad, Hamre, Hordaland, Norway ​to​ N​els N. Johnson (b January 30, 1820 Hordaland, Norway, d August 1855 Cedar, Mitchell, Iowa) a​nd ​Ann​ie Nielsdatter (b February 3, 1813 Hordaland, Norway, d August 3, 1897 Lincoln, Washington).

Martha was baptized at Hamre, Norway on October 14, 1842. Birth/baptismal record in the Norwegian Digital Archives on line for Hamre, Hordaland, Norway, 1834-1845, page 99, entry #51. "Marta Nielsdatter Reistad"; father: Niels Johannesen Reistad; mother: Anna Nielsdatter,

Believe Martha emigrated about 1848 to Columbia, Wisconsin with her parents. Her father may be in the 1850 census at Albion, Wisconsin but not 100% sure it is him.

In 1854, the family moved west probably to follow the Reverend Clausen party of 50 families who left Wisconsin to buy land in Mitchell County, Iowa.

Martha was confirmed in 1857 at the First Lutheran Church at St Ansgar, Mitchell, Iowa.

She mar​ried​ Joh​n Pedersen (Peterson) (M​aakes​tad) (b December 19, 1833 Hordaland, Norway, d July 11, 1931 Clear Lake, Cerro Gordo, Iowa) on December 30, 1858 at the First Lutheran, St A​nsgar, Mitchel​​l, Iowa.

The couple had 8 childr​e​n who were all born in Mitchell County, Iowa:
Peter Johnson Pedersen (b October 20, 1859, d June 24, 1943 Clear Lake, Iowa);

Gurine (b March 30, 1862, d May 19, 1938 Clear Lake, Iowa);

Ingeborg Martine (b April 29, 1864, d before 1880 same);

Niels Edward (b May 26, 1866 Newburg, Mitchell, Iowa, d December 16, 1872 same);
