DONOVAN K. HAVNEN

CLEAR LAKE — Donovan K. Havnen, 77, of Mason City, formerly of Clear Lake, died Saturday (July 3, 2004) at Good Shepherd Health Center in Mason City.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 North Fourth Street, Clear Lake with the Rev. Derik Yarian officiating.

Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City, where Military Honors will be conducted by the Clear Lake V.F.W. Post No. 4868. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be left to the Donovan K. Havnen Memorial Fund at 5285 South Shore Drive, Clear Lake, Iowa, 50428.

Donovan Kaywood, the son of Morgan and Opal (Kinden) Havnen, was born September 22, 1926, in Thompson. He received his education from Mason City High School, graduating in 1944.

He was united in marriage to Shirley Tagesen on May 11, 1945, in Cheyenne, Wyo. The couple made their home in Mason City. Don enlisted in the Army Air Force in January 1946, where he held the rank of private first class. He was honorably discharged in December 1946. He re-enlisted in the United States Air Force in October 1950 and was honorably discharged in October 1951. During his time in the military, he served in World War II and the Korean War. He came back to the Mason City area where he worked as a contractor with his father-in-law for many years. Later he went to work for Decker’s where he worked until injuries from a car accident forced an early retirement in 1979. After his accident, the couple moved to Clear Lake, and then back to Mason City. In 1986 Don received his pilot’s license. Don and Shirley moved into Good Shepherd Health Center in December 2002.

Don enjoyed spending time with his family as well as visiting his sister and brother-in -law, Mardelle’s and Dick’s, cabin in Minnesota where he loved to fish, camp, and fly airplanes. He also enjoyed hunting and was an avid hockey fan.

Don was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Clear Lake.

Don is survived by his children; Mary Lin Kolb and her husband, Doug, of Clear Lake, James Havnen and his wife, Pam,of Ankeny, Donovan Havnen and his wife, Jennifer, of Andover, Kan., Matthew Havnen of Nora Springs, Kathy Banks and her husband, Don, of Clear Lake, and Mark Havnen and his wife, Connie, of Estero, Fla.

Also surviving are 11 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; one stepbrother, Paul Havnen and his wife, Jeanne, of Clive; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Shirley, on August 11, 2003; daughter-in-law, Wendy Havnen; sister, Mardelle Holt; and brother, John Havnen.
