CAROLINE E. HAMMOND

CLEAR LAKE - Caroline E. Hammond, 88, a longtime resident of Clear Lake, died Tuesday (Jan. 6, 2009) in Hiawatha following a lengthy illness.

A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 17, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Mason City.

Caroline will be greatly missed by her three daughters, Caroline (Clark) McCallum of Harlingen, Texas, Rebecca Lynxwiler of Hiawatha and Penelope (Steve) Gelner of Cedar Rapids; a brother, David Getzschman of Omaha, Neb.; 12 grandchildren; 20 great- grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Caroline was preceded in death by her parents; two husbands, Alfred Petersen in 1943 and Leland Hammond in 1992; a sister, Dorothy Geihs; five brothers, Richard, Bill, Paul, Ed and Fred; son-in-law, Kurt Lynxwiler; and two grandchildren.

Caroline was born Aug. 20, 1920, to Paul and Pauline (Neckel) Getzschman of Omaha, Neb. Caroline was a loving wife and mother, and was a skilled artist, seamstress, and pianist. She was also an excellent cook who always provided her family and dear friends in Clear Lake with homemade meals, soups, breads, and desserts. She will be remembered for her warm hospitality, love and kindness.

Caroline was active as one of Jehovah's Witnesses for nearly 70 years. Her faith was a driving force in her life, and she enjoyed teaching and sharing the Bible's message with others. One of Caroline's greatest joys was studying the Bible with people.
