April 12, 1900 ~ October 18, 1995BRANDENTON, Fla. - Lois Holt Peterson Horton was born April 12, 1900 in Bardwell, Ky., and died Wednesday (Oct. 18, 1995) in Brandenton, Fla. She was the daughter of Anna (nee) Lawson Holt and William Lindsey Holt.
She later moved to Vincennes, Ind., where she attended Vincennes High School. As a junior, she played Alice in the senior class play "Alice of Old Vincennes" and was well remembered there for her portrayal.
In 1922, she graduated from Brenau College in Gainesville, Ga., where she belonged to Alpha Chi Omega, and was invited to membership in Zeta Phi Eta and Mu Phi Epsilon honorary music and speech sororities.
After graduating, she taught speech and drama at Brenau for two years and then travled with what was then known as "Chatauqua," appearing in plays and productions around the country.
Subsequently, Mrs. Horton spent virtually her entire adult life as a choir director and soloist in church choirs, beginning with the choir at Wesley Methodist Church, Mason City, Iowa, which her first husband, the Rev. Paul Peterson, built.
After retiring, her final service was to the Fair Lane Acres Chorus in Brandenton, Fla., which she organized and directed for 20 years.
As a summer resident of Erie over some 20 years, she was a member of the 9-hole Golf League at Overlake Golf Course, and an associate member of the First United Presbyterian Church of the Covenant.
Survivors include her daughter, Anne Kloss (Mrs. J. William) of Erie, Pa.; four grandchildren, Kathryn George of Ipswich, Mass.; Dorothy Kloss, of Erie, Pa.; David Kloss of Mansfield, Conn.; and Elizabeth Kramer of Philadelphia, Pa.; and seven great-grandchildren.
Services were held on Monday, Oct. 23, 1995, at Christ United Methodist Church, in Brandenton, Fla.
Memorials may be made to the Vicary Organ Endowment Fund, First United Presbyterian Church of the Covenant, 250 W. Seventh St., Erie, Pa. 16502; or to Wesley United Methodist Church, 1400 S. Pennsylvania Ave., Mason City, Iowa 50401.
Burton Funeral Homes, 602 West. 10th St., Erie, Pa. was in charge of arrangements.
