DORIS JUNE EWENCLEAR LAKE - Doris Jane Ewen, 81, of Clear Lake, died Sunday (June 21, 2009) at Oakwood Care Center, Clear Lake.
A funeral Mass will be held 11 a.m. Friday, June 26, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 1001 Ninth Ave. S., Clear Lake, with the Rev. John R. Tilp officiating. Interment will be 2 p.m. Friday, June 26, at St. Patrick's Cemetery, Dougherty.
Visitation will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. Thursday, June 25, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, with a Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. There will be further visitation one hour prior to services on Friday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church.Memorials may be given to Hospice of North Iowa or the Doris Ewen Memorial Fund, c/o Mary Ewen, 1045 Woodside Road, Longmont, CO 80501.
Doris was born June 27, 1927, in Dougherty, the daughter of James and Mae (Conners) Hogan. She graduated from Dougherty High School in 1945. She married Leo F. Ewen on June 18, 1949, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Dougherty. She worked as a cook at Newman High School, Clear Lake High School and the Mason City Airport Restaurant. She then worked at Fareway grocery store in charge of produce until her retirement in 1995.
Doris enjoyed quilting, embroidering and gardening. She was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Clear Lake.
Doris is survived by two daughters, Jane Hitsman, Shenandoah, Iowa, and Mary Ewen (Michael Suniga), Longmont, Colo.; two grandchildren, Lisa Hitsman, Boone, and Nicholas Hitsman, Owatonna, Minn.; twin brother, Donald Hogan and his wife Evelyn, Dougherty; three sisters Lillian Andregg, Mason City, Gladys Pfertzel (Gene), Rockford, Iowa, and Dorothy Foley, Webster City; sisters-in-law, Agnes Foxen, Waverly, and Helen Engels, Rockford, Iowa; and nieces and nephews.Doris was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Leo (Nov. 16, 2002); and her son-in-law, Dennis Hitsman (Aug. 22, 2003).
