November 21, 1923 ~ March 20, 2012The Rev. Donald B. Loots, 88, of Waverly, died Tuesday, March 20, 2012, at the Waverly Health Center in Waverly.
Don was born Nov. 21, 1923, the son of Heye and Kate (Els) Loots in Palmer. He completed his degree in social studies at Wartburg College and attended both Wartburg and Trinity Seminaries, graduating from Wartburg Theological Seminary in Dubuque in 1949. He was involved in internships at St. Paul's in Rice Lake, Wis., and at St. John in Charles City.
On June 8, 1949, Don was united in marriage to Dorothy Siege at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Dubuque.
Following ordination, Pastor Loots was called to serve St. John Lutheran in Grinnell. He was then called to St. James in Mason City for 13 years and then St. Paul's in Sheldon from 1970-1978. He was then called to Zion Lutheran in Muscatine for the next nine years. Ready for the joys of a smaller parish, Pastor Loots began serving West Clermont at Clermont before retiring to Waverly in 1993.
During his years of ministry, Pastor Loots served on seven district committees and boards. In addition, he served on the Wartburg College Board of Regents and as president of the Wartburg College Alumni Association. He was a member of the Wartburg College Hall of Fame Committee. In retirement, Pastor Loots continued his avid support of the Wartburg Knights and remained an active member of St. Paul's.
Don is survived by his wife, Dorothy of Waverly, three children; Don Loots of Waverly, Rebecca (Ron) Lundblad of Mason City, Mark (Barb) Loots of Fort Dodge, four grandchildren, three great grandchildren, six sisters; Carol (Pastor Ted) Guetzlaff, Evelyn Reppath, Delores (Pastor Alvin) Pinke, Maxine Siefkes, Catherine Martens, and Eunice Loots. He is preceded in death by his parents, one son, Christopher Loots, one sister, Helen Stubenvoll, brothers-in-law, Pastor Harry Rappath, Pastor Carl Stubenvoll, Pastor Luther Siefkes, Henry Martens.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 23, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Waverly with Pastor Curt Schneider officiating. Burial will be in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery, Waverly.
