Obituary - Safford W. Lock
May 17, 1906 ~ January 06, 1995

MASON CITY - Safford W. Lock, 88, of 726 N. Hampshire, died Friday (Jan. 6, 1995) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church, 201 Willowbrook Drive, with the Rev. Don Simmonds officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Major Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania, until noon on Tuesday at the funeral home and one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorials may go to Hospice of North Iowa.

Safford W. Lock was born May 17, 1906, in Mason City to John and Dottie (Wepking) Lock. Safford graduated from Mason City High School in 1925. He then graduated from Park College in Parkville, Mo., in 1931, majoring in physics and mathematics, and as an undergraduate he worked in the physic department for three years.

He married Lena M. Pals on Nov. 24, 1937, in Merservey, Iowa.

Safford was the owner and operator of Lock Photo for 36 years, retiring in 1969. Safford and Lena have been sponsors of the Cerro Gordo County Amateur Photography Contest at the MacNider Museum for several years.

He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, where he was a member for over 50 years and served in many capacities. He was a member of the Mason City Rotary, director of the Kinney Pioneer Museum, a ham radio operator and served on the Mason City Council for nine years. He was a past director of the Rod and Gun Club, a Boy Scout member for 77 years, earning the Silver Beaver Award, and a member of Sigma Phi Sigma (Honorary Physics Organization), AARP and the Mason City Senior Chamber of Commerce.

He was a former member and past president of the Mason City Garden Club and was in charge of the Horticulture Department at the North Iowa Fair for many years. He also served as chairman of the Water Works Commission, was a member of the Master Photo Finishers and Dealers for several years and was a member of the Good Sam Camping Group.

Survivors include his wife, Lena M. Lock of Mason City; one son, Howard Lock of Mason City; one daughter, Virginia "Ginger" Lafferty and her husband, Bill, of Deephaven, Minn.; one grandson, Michael and his wife, Kristi; two granddaughters, Kristine and Melinda; two sisters, Mrs. Rex (Ardith) Nelson of Naperville, Ill., and Mrs. John (Wandalee) Allen of Kalamazoo, Mich.; and one brother, Russell Lock of Liberty, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his parents and five sisters.
