W.B. SCROGGINS IS SURVIVED BY WIDOW, GRANDDAUGHTER, SISTER

CLEAR LAKE – Funeral services for W.B. Scroggins, 79, who died at his home, 100 South Oak Street, Saturday evening following a long illness, were held Tuesday afternoon at the Methodist Church. The Rev. Roy H. Cox, Spirit Lake, a former Clear Lake pastor, conducted the rites and burial was in Clear Lake Cemetery. Williams funeral home made the arrangements.

Pallbearers were H.S. Levisay, William McGowan, E.E. Studyvin, A.J. Rawson, H. Buss, and Charles Findson. Mrs. Rawson and Miss Darlene Rice arranged the flowers and Mr. and Mrs. A.H. Runcie, with Mrs. Harry Mason at the organ, sang “The Valley of Peace” and “Close to Thee.”

William B. Scroggins was born Aug. 20, 1859, on a farm in Kankakee County, Ill., the third child and only son of Mr. and Mrs. Hiram Scroggins, both of English Descent. He grew to manhood in that vicinity and on Nov. 6, 1883, was married to Miss Flora Charter, whom he had known since childhood.

Mr. and Mrs. Scroggins made their home in a newly-built cottage near the family home for several years while Mr. Scroggins operated the farm. After some years they moved to the village of Essex where Mr. Scroggins associated with an uncle and cousin in the hardware, farm implement and grain business. Soon, with his brother-in-law, Curtis Charter, he acquired the business.

Later he acquired an interest in a general store at Kankakee, Ill., operating it until he moved to Ringsted and returned to farming, this time with his son-in-law and daughter. Retiring from farming, Mr. and Mrs. Scroggins lived for a time at Algona, moving to Clear Lake 24 years ago.

At 16 years of age Mr. Scroggins united with the Methodist Episcopal Church, being affiliated with it for 63 years.

Mr. Scroggins is survived by his widow, Mrs. Flora Charter Scroggins, his granddaughter, Mrs. Harold Aitchison, and a sister, Mrs. Margaret S. Denning, Chicago, Ill., and two nephews, Earl Nelson and Clarence Denning, both of Chicago.

One child, Edith, was born to Mr. and Mrs. Scroggins. She preceded her father in death 19 years ago, almost to the hour.

NOTE – William B. Scroggins was born August 20, 1859, died January 14, 1939 and was buried in the Clear Lake Cemetery Section A row 13.
