Obituary - Robert R. Johnston
June 23, 1913 ~ March 04, 1996

MASON CITY - Robert R. Johnston, 82, of 508 S. Ohio Ave., Apt. D, died Monday (March 4, 1996) at North Iowa Mercy Health Center East.

There will be no visitation. The body was donated to the Mayo Foundation in Rochester, Minn.

A memorial Mass will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Holy Family Catholic Church, 714 N. Adams Ave., with the Rev. Raymond A. Burkle officiating. A flag folding ceremony will be conducted at the church by the Mason City Veteran's Memorial Association.

Memorials may be made to Holy Family Catholic Church or Hospice of North Iowa, in memory of Robert R. Johnston.

Hogan-Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., is in charge of arrangements.

Robert R. Johnston was born June 23, 1913, in Mason City, son of Clarence and Lois (Wilson) Johnston. He married Leonilla M. Schreiber on Oct. 4, 1934, at Holy Family Catholic Church.

Robert attended Mason City schools and then opened Johnston Flowers.

He served in the United States Navy during World War II. He then started Johnston Construction in 1950 until his retirement in 1965.

Robert and his wife enjoyed spending their summers at their home on the Canadian border.

He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church, a board member of the United Home Bank, Cerro Gordo County Planning and Zoning Committee, the Mason City Board of Review and numerous other fraternal organizations.

Survivors include one daughter, JoAnn Bobgan and her husband, Nick, of Mason City; two granddaughters, Susan Maggart and her husband, John, of Johnston, and Jane Demanett and her husband, David, of Johnston; five great-grandchildren, Kristin Demanett of Johnston, Brittany and Ashley Parker, both of Johnston, and Nicole and Jacob Maggart, both of Clive.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife on April 23, 1990; three sisters; and one brother in infancy.
