Obituary - Dean R. Hugi
April 05, 1927 ~ January 12, 1998

MASON CITY — Dean R. Hugi, 70, of 380 Yorktown Pike, died Monday (Jan. 12, 1998) at McAllen Heart Hospital, McAllen, Texas.

Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Grace United Methodist Church, 200 14th St. N.W., with the Rev. Herbert Shafer officiating. Interment will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery.

There will be no visitation. Major-Erickson Funeral Home, 111 N. Pennsylvania Ave., is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be directed to the Dean R. Hugi Memorial Fund.

Dean Hugi was born April 5, 1927, in Mason City, the son of Newell and Metta (Madison) Hugi. Dean graduated from Mason City High School in 1945, then enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served during World War II. Upon his discharge, Dean returned to Mason City and attended Mason City Junior College.

Dean married Merlemae Kolwinska on Aug. 15, 1947, in Mason City. Dean worked for Northwestern Bell Telephone Company for 35 years, retiring in 1982. Following retirement, in 1985, he began work for Findley Engineering and continued working there until 1989.

Dean was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, a life-time member of the V.F.W., a member of Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. No. 375, Masonic Lodge and Pioneers of Northwestern Bell. Dean enjoyed boating, golfing and watching sports, especially high school sports.

Survivors include his wife, Merlemae Hugi, of Mason City; two sons, Gary L. Hugi of Mason City and Craig A. Hugi and his wife, Barbara, of Cedar Falls; grandchildren, Jason Hugi and his wife, Lisa, of Mason City, Sarah Hugi of Mason City, Anne Crum of Cedar Falls and Joseph Crum of Milwaukee, Wis.; great-grandchildren, Brandon and Emily, of Mason City; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents.
