Obituary - Adele (Gillespie) Hays
August 23, 1906 ~ May 03, 2002

MASON CITY - Adele Gillespie Hays, 95, of Mason City, died Friday (May 3, 2002) at the Good Shepherd Health Care Center in Mason City.

According to her wishes, Mrs. Hays' body will be cremated. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church Wayside Chapel, 119 S. Georgia Ave. in Mason City, with the Rev. Jeffrey Dahlin officiating.

The family will receive friends for one hour prior to services at the church.

Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. is in charge of arrangements.

Adele was born August 23, 1906, in Mapleton, Iowa, the daughter of John Oscar and Dora Eleton (Edwards) Rathbun. She grew up in Iowa, Nebraska and Missouri.

She married Dale H. Hays on May 11, 1929, in Nevada, Iowa. They lived in Des Moines, until moving to Mason City in 1936. Adele's main priority was her family of six children.

She enjoyed gardening, hand work, and any type of games, especially cards, was an avid reader and enjoyed listening to Lawrence Welk.

She held the record of being a member of the Wilson Elementary School PTA for 26 years. After the death of her husband and best friend of 60 years on April 17, 1989, Adele moved to the Good Shepherd Nursing Home.

Adele is survived by two sisters, Bethine Nosler and Maxine Forbes, both of San Clemente, Calif. She is also survived by sons and daughters, Richard D. Hays and his wife, Sharon, of Mason City, Sandra Lindsay and husband, John, of rural Mason City, Janet A. Hays of Forks, Wash., Amy Mammen and husband, Jim, of Roseville, Minn., and Steve Hays and wife, Pamela, of Mason City; and daughter-in-law, Mabel Hays of Nora Springs, Iowa.

Adele is survived by her grandchildren, Edith Lindsay, Heidi Roggeman and her husband Jeff, Jay Lindsay and his wife Linda, Curtis Lindsay, Shana Hays-Jeffrey and her husband Jerry, Cannon Hays and his wife Amy, Stephanie Hays, Chris Hays, and Amy Hays, all of the Mason City area, Brett Hays and his wife Mauri, of California, Holly Howe and her husband, Paul and Bart Hays and his wife, Karen, of Texas, Denise Hays-Hengevelt and her husband, Don, Anne Mammen, Jane Mammen, and Charlie Mammen, all of Minnesota, and Dale Kendall Hays, of Arizona, 19 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers and six sisters; one son, Davie Lee Hays; and one infant grandson, Jeffery Hays.
