D. CARSTENS, 98, RETIRED FARMER DIES

Dethlef Carstens, 98, retired farmer, 504 4th S.E., died Friday morning at a Mason City hospital. He had farmed in the Burchinal area for many years.

Mr. Carstens was born Dec. 8, 1858, at Shiechting Schleswig Holstein, Germany. HE CAME TO THE United States in 1884 and farmed 35 years before moving to Mason City in 1922.

He was a member of St. James Lutheran Church and a retired member of the Cerro Gordo Farm Bureau. He helped to organize the Farmers Elevator of Burchinal, and was a director of it 25 years. He also was a school director at Burchinal and was active in organizing a number of cooperative groups.

During World War I he served on the Cerro Gordo County Board of Defense. He was a member of the Elks Club 375 Mason City and the Modern Woodmen of America.

He was married to Doris Tietgen of Hamburg, Germany, in 1887. She preceded him in death May 29, 1926. He was later married to Albertina Schultz in 1927 at Garner.

Surviving are his wife; five sons, Dethlef Junior, Al K., Claus and Sophus of Burchinal. and Adolph of Denver, Colo.; and three daughters, Mrs. Rollan (Marie) Essington, Council Bluffs; Mrs. Irl (Bertha) Trevett, Rockwell; and Mrs. Frank (Dorothy) Marguard, Clear Lake; 14 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

Four step-children also survive, Walter Schultz, Minneapolis; Mrs. Henry (Emma) Greiman, Garner; Mrs. James (Lena) Manuel and Mrs. Arthur (Rose) Lyons, Mason City.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Friends may call at the Patterson-James Chapel from Saturday afternoon until the time of services.
