Fern M. Boyle, 98, long time Clear Lake business owner, died Wednesday, Oct. 1,
2003 at the Heritage Care Center, 501 S. Kentucky, Mason City, Iowa.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 4, at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial
Chapel with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating. The family suggests memorials to
Hospice of North Iowa or to Zion Lutheran Church of Clear Lake.

Fern was born Jan. 25, 1905 in Clear Lake to Oluf T. and Susan (Olson) Hansen.
She graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1922 where she was an honor student
and a member of the girls traveling basketball team. Fern attended the
University of Iowa where she was president of Alpha Chi Omega sorority and
president of the Pan Hellenic Association. She graduated in 1927 with a BA
Degree. In 1931 she was married to Herman L. Boyle at her family home in Clear
Lake. Immediately following the wedding they left by train and then by boat for
South America where they lived in several different countries including
Argentina, Brazil, Mexico and Uruguay.

After Herman's retirement they moved to Clear Lake and operated a potato farm at
Thompson, Iowa and lived in Fern's childhood home, where she lived until her
health forced her to move to the Heritage Care Center. Fern and Herman were
involved in the operation of Oluf T. Hansen Dept. Store. The store was started
by her father in August, 1899. Fern was a life long member of the Zion Lutheran
Church, Clear Lake, where she was once an organist. Fern had the honor of being
the Grand Marshall of the Clear Lake 4th of July parade in 1999.

Fern was a very positive person who always found a way to make people feel
special, and will be greatly missed by her many friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Herman, in 1994, and her
sister, Genevieve (Doli) Morgan.

She is survived by her sister-in-law, Mary Jane Boyle; two nephews, Phillip and
Tom Boyle; a niece, Carolyn Hart; a very special cousin, Erna Hansen Bevington;
and the Valores and Russell Young family.
