Grace Regina Mathahs, 96, of 405 27th Avenue South, Clear Lake, died
surrounded by her family, Tuesday, Aug. 11, 2009 at Oakwood Care Center, Clear
Lake. Grace was very fortunate to have been visited by numerous family members
during the last few weeks before her death. A funeral Mass was held on
Thursday, Aug. 13, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, with Msgr. John Hemann
officiating. Interment was at the Clear Lake Cemetery. Memorials may be given
to Apple Valley Assisted Living or Hospice of North Iowa.

Grace Regina was born Sept. 9, 1912 in Whittemore, Iowa, the daughter of
Steven and Anna (Origer) Baumann. She attended school at Presentation Academy,
Whittemore. She went to work in Thornton, Iowa where she met Vern. They were
married Feb. 9, 1937 in Swaledale, Iowa and were blessed with two daughters.
They lived south of Clear Lake, where they farmed. Vern died in 1980, but she
continued to live on the farm until moving to Apple Valley Assisted Living,
where she loved living and being with the people there.

Grace loved being a farm wife where she raised chickens and ducks. She
loved to garden, was an excellent cook and baker. She loved being with her
grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed playing cards, especially
500, sewing and making quilts.

Grace was a devout Catholic. She was a member of St. Patrick’s Catholic
Church since 1946.

Grace was blessed by the staff at Oakwood Care Center and hospice, who
went above and beyond to make her comfortable.

Grace is survived by two daughters, Donna Penaluna and her husband,
Ken, Ankeny, Iowa, and Carol Costello and her husband, Larry, Ventura; five
grandchildren, Dan (Melissa) Penaluna, Ankeny, Sue (Tom) Ward, Iowa City, Iowa,
Robin (Marc) Younge, Ventura, Jill (Al) Schwarte, Albia, Iowa and April
Costello, Chicago, Ill.; nine great-grandchildren, Brandan, Carissa and Jordan
Penaluna, Tyler and Caitlin Ward, Courtney and Sydney Younge and Zach and Hanna
Schwarte; sister-in-law, Agnes Bauman, Whittemore; brother-in-law, Dr. James
Chambers, Des Moines, Iowa and numerous nieces and nephews.

Grace was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Vern; twin grandsons,
Todd and Tad Costello; brothers, Mike, John, Peter and William Baumann and
sister, Molly Chambers.
