Tom was 59 years young. He graduated from high school in 1966 and
volunteered for service with the U.S. Army from 1966-1969 with a tour of duty in
Vietnam. Tom later graduated from Iowa Lakes Community College and Buena Vista
University magnum cum laude.

to Debra Eberhardt. They combined their families and together provided for
seven children, Tom Jr., Todd, Travis, Josh, Tracy, Zach, and Beau.

His public service career spanned over 30 years, including serving the
community of Clear Lake from 1978 to 2001. During this time, he held the
offices of City Comptroller and City Administrator. He continued serving people
as an elected member of the Clear Lake Sanitary District Board of Trustees.

After leaving his role with the City of Clear Lake, Tom, together with Deb
and his family, first leased and later purchased the Barrel Drive In. Together
they continued the business until Tom’s health was not sufficient to continue on
a day to day basis.

Tom’s grandfather once told him not to take more than you give in life. Tom
believed strongly that each of us needs to give of ourselves to help others.
Over the years he performed volunteer service to youth programs, to his church,
and to his community. He treasured his 15 years of service as a volunteer
fireman with the Clear Lake Fire Department. He felt it was an honor to be
allowed to serve others when they most needed help. Tom’s hobbies included
golf, and he was an avid Hawkeye fan.
