Donald E. Garlock of Clear Lake died Tuesday, July 16, 2002 at Oakwood Care
Center.

Donald was born May 1, 1911 north of Clear Lake to Christine and Sherman
Garlock. He attended Clear Lake School and graduated in 1928.
Donald worked at the Surf Ballroom from 1933 to 1936 where he learned to enjoy
big band music. In 1937 he went into business with his brother, Herb. They
operated a portable roller rink for several summers. In 1942 he worked on the
Alaskan Highway for E.M. Duesenberg. In March 1943 he enlisted in the Army and
served with the 29th Division. He received a Purple Heart for the wounds he
received in France during the days following D-Day.

Donald married Ruth Duesenberg from Garner, Iowa on Oct 17, 1940 at the Little
Brown Church at Nashua. They were married for 53 years. On his return from the
service, Donald worked for E.L. Secory Plumbing, retiring in 1976.
After retiring he and Ruth traveled in the Eastern part of the United States and
spent time in Oregon. They traveled to England where he was stationed during
World War II. They also visited Normandy Beachhead in France where he
participated in the landing June 6, 1944.

Donald was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth; parents, Christine and Sherman
Garlock; sisters, Weenonah and Idelle; and brothers, Ernest and Herbert.
He is survived by two sons, Donald R., of Clear Lake, and Dennis, of Iowa City;
two daughters, Connie Pluchos and her husband, George, of Portland, Ore., and
Carol Garlock of Wailea, Hawaii; two granddaughters, Katherine and Emily Pluchos
of Portland, Ore.; and a brother, Myron, of Clear Lake, and many friends.
Memorials may be directed to the United Methodist Church of Clear Lake and the
Girl Scout Camp Tanglefoot.

Memorial Services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, Aug. 2, 2002, at the United
Methodist Church, 508 2nd Ave North, Clear Lake, Iowa with visitation one hour
before the service at the church. Inurnment will be in the Clear Lake Cemetery,
Clear Lake. Military honors will be by the Clear Lake V.F.W..
