Wayne "Shorty" Spilman, 74, 14754 Evergreen, Clear Lake, died Monday, July 5,
2004 at Mercy Medical Center of North Iowa, Mason City, Iowa. A funeral service
was held Saturday, July 10, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, Clear Lake, with
the Rev. Dean Hess officiating. Interment was held at Memorial Park Cemetery,
Mason City. Military Honors were by the Clear Lake V.F.W. Memorials may be
given to the Wayne Spilman Memorial Fund.

Shorty was born Oct. 26, 1929, on the family farm south of Clear Lake, the son
of Daniel and Alphena (Thompson) Spilman Jr. He attended rural schools. Shorty
served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. When he came back to Clear Lake
he farmed the family farm with his brothers and father. Shorty married Phyllis
"Till" Kelley on Oct. 10, 1954 at Zion Lutheran Church.

Shorty and Till enjoyed going to sales and collecting antiques. They enjoyed
their many family pets, including their pet cow, Josie. He had a great love for
cattle and horses. Shorty could tell a joke like nobody else. He loved
visiting. He was loved by all and never met a stranger. Shorty was a member of
Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, and the Clear Lake V.F.W.

Shorty is survived by his wife, Phyllis (Till) Spilman, Clear Lake; three
sisters, Thelma Duregger, Clear Lake, Helen Duregger and her husband, Fred, New
Porte News, Vir., and Betty Thomas, Clear Lake; two brothers, Sam Spilman,
Clear Lake, and Daniel T. Spilman, Clear Lake; two sisters-in-law, Audrey
Spilman and Alma Spilman, both of Clear Lake, and many nieces and nephews.
Shorty was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Orval and Dale
Spilman; two brothers-in-law, Virgil Duregger and Bill Thomas, and many
wonderful pets.
