Donn E. White, 89, of Clear Lake, died Sunday, Dec. 10, 2000 at the Good
Shepherd Care Center, Mason City, Iowa.

A Celebration of Life was held Saturday, Dec. 16, at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial
Chapel, Clear Lake. Memorials may be given to the Clear Lake Public Library
Foundation, 200 N. 4th St.,
Clear Lake, Iowa 50428.

Donn was born in Iowa Falls, Iowa, the son of Jess M. and Cora (Wohlford)
White. The family moved to Hampton, Iowa where he graduated from Hampton High
School and started his newspaper career as a printer for the Hampton Chronicle
and Record. Donn married Rosemary (Pose) Jeanne Whitney
Oct. 10, 1932 in Freeport, Ill. During World War II, Donn worked at Lockheed on
the design of the P38 and XP80 airplanes. He continued his newspaper career in
advertising for the Pontiac (Mich.) News and Alhambra (Calif.) Post-Advocate
before coming to Mason City and joining the Globe Gazette
advertising staff in 1947. As publisher of the Globe Gazette he helped usher
the newspaper into the age of modern technology, retiring after 27 years. After
his retirement he ran for Clear Lake City Council because of what he saw as an
obligation to serve. People that lived here 100 years ago did things to improve
the town for me to live in. I felt it was my
responsibility to do the same for the future, he said in 1978.

Donn was a longtime resident of Clear Lake and was active in many civic
activities in North Iowa. He served on the boards of the Mason City United
Fund, Junior Achievement, Mason City Development Assoc. and the North Iowa Fair
Assoc. He was also active in Mason City Toastmasters, Mason City
Kiwanis Club and the Winnebago Council of Boy Scouts. He was a past master of
the Verity Masonic Lodge in Clear Lake and was a member of Bethel Chapter,
Royal Arch Masons.

Donn loved to do wood carving, sculpting, and make jewelry. Family was
extremely important to Donn. Also, he enjoyed activities around the lake,
making sure the birds were fed throughout the long Iowa winters.

Donn is survived by his wife Rosemary (Pose) White, Mason City, Iowa; five
children, Diane Ashland and her husband Lloyd, Clear Lake, Judi Hansen and her
husband Norm, El Segundo, Calif., David White and his wife Christina,
