Earl Martin Hefty, 66, of 11 S. 9th St., Clear Lake, Iowa, died Friday, Dec. 17,
2010 at the Mercy Medical Center North Iowa, Mason City, Iowa.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, Dec. 21 at the Ward-Van Slyke Colonial
Chapel, Clear Lake, Iowa with Pastor Will Hunsaker officiating. Interment was
in the Clear Lake Cemetery. Family suggests memorials to Earl M. Hefty Memorial
Fund.

Earl was born July 7, 1944 in Kearney, Neb., the son of Paul and Louise (Bintz)
Hefty. At an early age he moved with his mother to Clear Lake. While attending
school he was active in sports. He played football and was honored as All-State.
He graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1962. He attended the University of
Nebraska where he played football his freshman year. He then attended N.I.A.C.C.
and, subsequently, the University of Iowa where he obtained a Bachelor in
Business (Marketing) degree. He married Barbara Erickson in 1964.

He worked for 3M in sales for over 20 years in Chicago, Minneapolis, and later
Atlanta. In the late 1990’s he moved back to Clear Lake. He worked at Econo
Foods in Clear Lake for the past seven years.

Earl loved to cook and grill out and try new recipes in the kitchen. He enjoyed
watching the Hawkeyes, Vikings, and riding around the lake front “to see if it
was still there”, and liked watching the sunsets. He enjoyed the fishing trips
to Winnibigoshish in Bena, Minn. with Shirley and Clancy and Julie Wiebenga. He
enjoyed spending time in his vegetable garden and yard.

Earl is survived by his significant other, Shirley Wiebenga, Clear Lake; three
children, Kristin (Michael ) Poss, Carrollton, Ga.; Brent Hefty and his fiancé,
Erin Harman, Dunwoody, Ga. and Louisville, Ky. and Aaron (Sarah) Hefty, Ft.
Worth, Texas; three grandchildren, Benjamin, Kamryn and Kailee Poss; two
nephews; cousins, Dale and Janelle Sargent and Loren and Jane Wilcox. He was
preceded in death by his parents and brother, Paul Hefty.
