Jessie Eleanor Huey, 94, Clear Lake, died Thursday, April 6, 2006, at
the Oakwood Care Center in Clear Lake.
Memorial services and celebration of her life were held Monday, April 10, at
the Christian Church, Clear Lake with Pastor Mark Young officiating. Inurnment
was held in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City, Iowa.
The family of Jessie Eleanor (Church) Huey has requested that memorial
contributions be made to the Clear Lake Christian Church or to the North Iowa
Figure Skating Club in her memory.
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 North 4th Street, Clear Lake was in charge
of the arrangements.
Jessie Eleanor (Church) Huey was born in Mason City, on Sept. 22, 1911, the
daughter of Albert and Grace Amy (Thorne) Church. She attended and received her
education in the Mason City School system, graduating from Mason City High
School. Jessie also attended and graduated from Mason City Junior College. She
was united in marriage to Donald Huey on May 30, 1931, in Mason City.
Jessie was employed by the Clear Lake Independent Telephone Company starting as
a night switchboard operator saying, "number please." When the phone company
became automated, she worked in the office. She retired in 1976 but continued
as a part-time employee.
Jessie spent many wonderful years with the North Iowa Figure Skating Club. She
participated in their annual shows and was a volunteer instructor of the
Munchkins (beginners), and received the Calvin Martin award for outstanding
volunteerism in 1991. She was known as the "skating grandma" and taught into
her early 80's. Jessie also was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels in Clear Lake.
She was a longtime member of the Clear Lake Christian Church, their C.W.F.,
taught Sunday school, helped in the nursery and was a past choir member. She
was also a member and past secretary of DAR and Mothers Study Club.
As grandma and great-grandma, she loved watching her grandchildren's
activities. A particularly enjoyable hobby was taking pictures of her family and
club groups and sharing them. Anything "Clear Lake" was a target for her camera
including beautiful sunsets, kites and snow scenes.
Left to cherish her memory are her children; Donnarae Carrell of Birchwood,
Wis., Scoop (Jan) Huey, of Mason City, and Dodie Huey of Phoenix, Az.;
grandchildren, Tom (Betsy) Carrell, Aura Lea Carrell, Ted (Cathy) Carrell, Tim
(Amy) Carrell, Mary Elizabeth (David) Morriss, Douglas Huey, Debbie (David)
Wilson, and Doreen (Chris) Bellit; great-grandchildren, Andrea, Parker, Hunter
and Sam Carrell, Audra, Max (Janel) and Alex Pfannebecker, Steve and Nick
Carrell, Quinn, Harrison, Noah, and Oliver Carrell, John, Will, and Graham
Morriss, Zach Wilson, Rachael Huey, and Josh Holmes; brother, Robert Church of
Mason City; special niece, Barbara (Harold) Gaiser of Mason City, as well as
several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; former husband, Donald Huey, Sr., who
died on June 15, 1994; sisters, Lael Miller, Esther Paone, Alice Overturf,
Marion Tutton, and Betty Bloch; brothers, Nathan and Albert Church.
Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel was in charge of arrangements.
