Robert S. Kiefer, 84, Clear Lake, died Monday, April 7, 2008 at Oakwood Care
Center, Clear Lake. A Memorial Mass will be held Thursday, April 10, 11 a.m.,
at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, 1001 9th Ave S., Clear Lake, with Msgr. Joseph
Slepicka officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday, April 9, 4 – 7 p.m. with a
Scriptural Wake Service at 6 p.m. followed by a 3rd Degree Knights of Columbus
Rosary at 6:30 p.m. at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel and one hour preceding the
service at the church. Inurnment will be at the St. Patrick’s Catholic
Cemetery, rural Lake Mills, Iowa at 2 p.m. Memorials may be given to the Robert
S. Kiefer Memorial Fund.Bob was born on a farm just east of Forest City, Iowa on April 1, 1924. He
was the seventh of nine children born to Valentine and Hazel (Hurd) Kiefer. He
often reminisced about fun times growing up, like when he and his brothers
would butcher a chicken for a snack when Mom and Dad would go to town. He met
the love of his life, Marjory Maher, and married her on July 5, 1943. They
decided to open a photography studio and settle in Garner, Iowa. Kiefer Studio
was opened in 1947. They enjoyed going to Clear Lake so much they decided to
buy a little piece of lake shore just north of State Park and built a cabin. In
1953, they decided to move their home and the studio to Clear Lake. Bob enjoyed
taking pictures of people during their special times in life. He tried taking
aerial pictures, but hanging out of a small airplane was not his thing. Bob
excelled with his wedding, family and baby photography. When Miss Iowa pageants
were held in Clear Lake, he was the official photographer. He touched many
lives with his photography and made many friends.They bought an acreage north of Clear Lake. He loved Clear Lake, but
wanted to live in the country again. While on his acreage he loved puttering in
a large garden, tending some chickens and sheep. He enjoyed the country. Bob
enjoyed life, his family and friends. He enjoyed a good steak, good company
and a comfortable chair at the end of the day. The past three years he made his
home at Apple Valley Assisted Living, renewing old friendships and making new
ones.Bob is survived by his three children, Steven Eugene Kiefer (Julie), Sedro
Woolley, Washington; Mary Jo Keenan (Tom), Clear Lake; Kathy Ann Mostrom
(Mark), Ventura; sister, Francis Adams, Forest City; six grandchildren, Adam
Comley, Beaver Falls, Penn., Mike Keenan, Gainesville, Fla., Chris Keenan, North
Liberty, Iowa, Matt Mostrom, Ames, Iowa, Brian Mostrom, Ventura, and Mary Louise
Tramp, Gretna, Neb.; great-grandchildren, Ali Keenan, Sean Keenan, Taylor
McLaughlin, Charlie Keenan, Lyla Keenan, Adam Comley Jr, Ashley Comley, Aaron
Comley, Amber Egsdahl, Ashley Egsdahl and Annette Egsdahl.Bob was preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years, Marjory;
granddaughter, Kim McLaughlin; brothers, Don, Floyd, Cliff, Shirley Kiefer; and
sisters, Wanda Johnson, Ruth Irvin and Verna Drake.Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, is in charge of arrangements.
