Helen Cole Brooks, 87, of Clear Lake died Sunday, July 31, 1994, at Oakwood Care
Center, Clear Lake.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Aug. 3, at the First Congregational Church
in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Murley Severtson officiating. Burial was in the
Clear Lake Cemetery.
The family suggests memorials to the Helen Cole Brooks Memorial Fund.

Helen Brooks was born July 23, 1907, in Highmore, S. D., the daughter of Ludwig
A. Hendricks and Ida (nee) Cole Hendricks. She graduated from Clear Lake High
School in 1925 and received a bachelor of arts degree from the University of
Northern Iowa in 1929. Following her education, she moved to Clear Lake.

On June 14, 1936, she married Gerald Brooks at the Little Brown Church in
Nashua, Iowa. She and her husband enjoyed spending their winters in Texas and
Florida.

She was employed at the Mason City Globe Gazettes Clear Lake and Mason City
offices for 18 years, taking news reports and advertising. She and her husband
owned and operated Brooks Grocery in Clear Lake from 1967-1972.
She was an avid golfer and loved to dance, paint and do arts and crafts.

She was a member of the First Congregational Church, Clear Lake, past president
of the Womens Fellowship and a member of the Wa-Tan-Ye Club and D.A.R.

She is survived by her husband, Gerald Brooks, Clear Lake; two cousins, Mrs.
Charlotte Hammond, Cookville, Tenn., and Mrs. Marjorie Narum, Madison, Wis.; a
sister-in-law and brother-in-law Ferne Melcher and Claytus Melcher, Clear Lake;
a niece, Linda Schipper, Cedar Falls, Iowa; and a nephew, Mark Melcher, McLean,
Va. She was preceded in death by her parents.
