CLEAR LAKE - Jay L. Grimm, 65, of 12913 Grouse Ave., Clear Lake, died Wednesday (Aug. 2, 2000) at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa in Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Zion Lutheran Church, 112 N. Fourth St. in Clear Lake, with the Rev. Kermit Roisen and the Rev. Dean Hess officiating. Interment will be in Clear Lake Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. today at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., Clear Lake, and then begin at 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home until one hour before the services at the church.
Jay was born Oct. 13, 1934, in Sac City, the son of Homer and Beulah (Wilson) Grimm. Jay moved with his parents in the late 1930s to a farm north of Ventura. He graduated from Ventura High School in 1953. He lettered four years in football, basketball, baseball and played cornet in the high school band.
Jay married Virginia Ashland June 13, 1953, at Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake. He worked for Coyier Service Station in Clear Lake for six years. In 1959 he started working for Arwell-Orkin as a service tech. He retired in 1995 after 36 years on the job, the last 16 years as the branch manager in Mason City.
Jay married Marian Casperson Ashland April 16, 1982. He enjoyed attending and supporting his kids during their sporting events and also was an avid Hawkeye and Viking fan.
Jay was known at Zion Lutheran Church where he was a member and ushered. He was fondly known as the "candy man," since he was always giving candy to the kids.
Jay is survived by his children, Lowell Grimm and his wife, Carrie, of Lakeville, Minn., Doug Grimm and his wife, Willi, of Clear Lake, Chris Grimm and his wife, Mary, of Bettendorf; four stepchildren, Susan Hrubes and her husband, Marvin, of Woodbridge, Va., Tom Ashland and his wife, Georgia, of Clear Lake, Jane Ashland Trayers of Clear Lake, and Tim Ashland and his wife, Katie, of Farmington, Minn.; seven grandchildren, Thomas, Hannah, Desiree, Christina, Katherine and Carly Grimm and Delishia Folkerts; nine stepgrandchildren, Matthew Hrubes, Lisa Hrubes, Christopher Ashland, Jeremy Ashland, Lee Trayers, Danielle Trayers, Ashley Trayers, Amber Ashland and Kayla Ashland; one brother, Gordon Grimm and his wife, Esther, of Center City, Minn.; and one sister, Julia Crow and her husband, David, of Glendale, Mo.
He was preceded in death by his parents, second wife, Marian; and one stepson, Jim Ashland.
