CLEAR LAKE - Robert L. Heston, 78, of 3300 W. Second Ave., died Wednesday (May 29, 1996) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit, Mason City.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Zion Lutheran Church, Clear Lake, with the Rev. Dean Hess officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery, Mason City.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday and from 9 a.m. to noon Friday at Ward-Van Slyke Colonial Chapel, 101 N. Fourth St., and one hour prior to services at the church. The family suggests memorials to made to Zion Lutheran Church or Hospice of North Iowa.
Robert was born June 9, 1917, in Fairfield, the son of James F. and Elizabeth (Fowler) Heston. He graduated from Fairfield High School in 1934 and earned a degree from Parsons College in Fairfield in 1938. He received a Master's Degree from the University of Minnesota, as well as a specialist degree in school administration from Iowa State University.
On Jan. 13, 1940, he was united in marriage to Grace Ireland at the Little Brown Church in Nashua.
Robert taught school and coached in Arlington, Sumner, Clear Lake, and Princeton, Ill. He moved to Mason City in 1950 and served as athletic director while coaching and teaching. In 1967, he moved to Iowa Falls and served as superintendent of schools until 1978. He then returned to Clear Lake. He loved golfing, fishing and traveling.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Clear Lake, the Iowa Association of School Administrators and was a life time member of the State of Iowa Board of Public Instruction.
He is survived by his wife, Grace Ireland Heston, of Clear Lake; a son, Dr. R. Michael Heston, and his wife, Marsha, of Mason City; a daughter, Rose Anne Wallace, and her husband, David, of Durham, N.C.; a daughter, Kathleen S. Henrickson, of Cedar Rapids; a son, Dr. James F. Heston, and his wife, Lori, of Homer, Alaska; four grandchildren, Susanne Heston of Marshall, Mo.; Pam Heston of Temple, Texas; Steve Heston of Mason City, and David Heston of Anchorage, Alaska; and several step grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Maude McDonald and Mildred Fehy; and two brothers, Harry and Glen Heston.
