Ferne White, 87, of Mitchell, Iowa, died on Tuesday, March 2, 1993 at the Faith Lutheran Home in Osage, Iowa.
Funeral services were held on Saturday at the Faith Lutheran Church in Mitchell, with the Rev. Rose Marie Lewis and Rev. Paul Birkedal officiating. Burial was in the Rock Falls Cemetery.
Ferne Lucile White was born on January 6, 1906, at Rockford, Iowa, the daughter of J.L. and Pearl (Pickett) Bowen. She was raised near Rockford and in Marshalltown.
She graduated from Rockford High School and attended Cornell College in Mount Vernon and graduated from Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. She taught school in Rock Falls and Lohrville.
Ferne married Everett D. White on December 25, 1928, in Rockford. They lived in Fenton for several years before moving their family to Rock Falls. In 1954, they moved to Mitchell, where they both taught school.
Ferne enjoyed her family and especially looked forward to Sunday get-togethers. Her hobbies included music, needlework, sewing and photography. She taught piano lessons and played the organ for many years at both Rock Falls and Mitchell.
She was a member of the Rockford Methodist church, Rock Falls Methodist Church and Faith Lutheran Church in Mitchell. She was a member of the W.C.T.U. and the W.E.L.C.A. in Mitchell.
Survivors include her children: Lucille and Dale Jackson of Redwood City, Calif., Margaret and Mike Byington of Rock Falls, Don and Novella White of Rock Falls, Janice and Don Abrahamson of Mason City, Jim and Sharon White of Tracy, Calif., Carol and Ray Arickx of Mitchell; 16 grandchildren: Dale A., Michael D. and Mark E. Jackson, Karen Birkedal, Peggy Schuver, Ellen Hinecker, Holly Gallagher, Becky Kidd, Beth Ollanik, Cindy Duffy, David Abrahamson, Brenda Ortiz and Bill White, and Angela, Paul and Dan Arickx; 19 great-grandchidlren; one sister, Esther Kock, Rockford; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Everett, on January 27, 1993; her parents; an infant daughter, Judith; a brother, Lloyd; and a sister, Bernice.
