HAS LEAVE FROM OVERSEAS

M. E. FINDLING, gunner's mate 3/C, is spending a 10 day leave at the home of his mother, Mrs. Minnie LOWEN, 202 2nd S.E. Mate FINDLING has just returned from 7 months overseas duty. He will report to Brooklyn, N.Y., for active duty at the end of his leave.

IN HOSPITAL

Mrs. Minnie LOWN, 202 2nd S.E., has received word that her son, Marion Eugene FINDLING, is recovering from pneumonia in a hospital somewhere in Africa. He has just been promoted from seaman 1st class to gunner's mate 3rd class. FINDLING received his training at the Great Lakes, Norfolk, Va., and in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Marion E. Findling, U.S. Navy, Dies in Service of Country

Navy Department Sends Word Body Is Being Shipped to Mason City

The body of Marion Eugene FINDLING, gunner's mate 3/C, son of Mrs. Minnie LOWN, 202 2nd S.E., who died in the service of his country, according to a telegram received here Wednesday, is being shipped to Mason City, it was announced in a later telegram from the navy department on Thursday.

"The navy department deeply regrets to inform you of the death of your son, Marion Eugene FINDLING, gunner's mate 3/C, U.S.N., as a result of ruptured intestine while in the service of his country," read the telegram signed by Vice Admiral Randall JACOBS, chief of naval personnel.

"His remains are enroute to the United States and will be held pending instructions from his wife, Mrs. Clarence (sic) May FINDLING, Plymouth, Iowa. To prevent possible aid to our enemies please do not divulge the name of his ship or station. The navy department extends to you its sincerest sympathy in your great sorrow."

Mate FINDLING had been home in March following 7 months of overseas service and at that time was married to Miss Clarene May HUGI of Plymouth. He had reported back to his station for active duty at the end of his leave.

FINDLING entered the service on Dec. 16, 1942, and took his boot training at the Great Lakes, later continuing training at Norfolk, Va., and Brooklyn, N.Y. Last December he had been somewhere in Africa and word came at that time that he was recovering fron pneumonia in a hospital there.

Surviving besides his wife and mother are his sister, Mrs. Richard REYNOLDS, 24th S.W.; his brother, Lonni FINDLING, 211 Madison S.W., and his stepfather, Clyde LOWN. Funeral arrangements are incomplete pending arrival of the body.

Findling Rites to Be Held on Friday

Funeral services for Marion Eugene FINDLING, gunner's mate 3/C, whose body is scheduled to arrive in Mason City Thursday morning, will be held Friday afternoon at 2:30 at the First Methodist church, Plymouth, with the Rev. Russell E. POPE, pastor of the Church of the Open Bible, conducting the services. Short services will be held on Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock in Mason city at the home of FINDLING'S mother, Mrs. Minnie LOWN, 202 2nd S.E. The Bride funeral home, Manly, is in charge.

FINDLING RITES HELD THURSDAY

God Is Real to Men at Sea, Says Pastor

"They that go down to the sea in ships, that do business in great waters, these see the works of the Lord and His wonders in the deep," was the text chosen from Psalm 107 by Rev. Russell E. POPE, pastor of the Church of the Open Bible, Mason City, at short funeral services for Marion E. FINDLING, gunner's mate 3/C, in the home of his mother, Mrs. Minnie LOWN, 202 2nd S.E., Thursday afternoon.

"God has performed many miracles in the sea and makes himself very real to those who have faith in him," continued the pastor, citing instances from Scripture as well as modern miracles occurring in this war when God has intervened out on the high seas. He mentioned the miracle of raina nd food in the case of RICKENBACHER adrift on the sea.

"So we can still call today, 'Master, save us else we peris.' One might say, "But Eugene perished.' But Eugene had faith and to the children of God, Christ is near at hand to deliver them. When Jesus says, 'Peace, be still.' a great calm comes into troubled hearts and calms the waves of this restless life. God knows what is best and all things work together for the good of them who love Him.

"In the world today there is no place of complete peace except in Christ and nations will not be at peace until they like millions of individuals have peace in their hearts."

Floyd FERGUSON, pharmacist's mate 3/C, escorted the body of Mate FINDLING from Boston, Mass., and was present at the funeral. Patriotic organizations attending were the Navy Mothers and the Veterans of Foreign Wars with their auxiliary. Mrs. M. W. REID, commander of the Navy Mothers read 2 poems, "Little White Hats and Suits of Blue" and "Crossing the Bar." Al JAMES and Marcia SOLUM sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Some Day We'll Understand," with Miss Doris GILMORE accompaning. The Bride funeral home, Manly, had charge of the services.

The body of the sailor was taken to Plymouth where funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the First Methodist church. [Interment was made at Oakwood Cemetery, Plymouth.]
