Eugene Herman Oulman – December 5, 1922 – September 26, 2006

OWATONNA, Minn. — Gene H. Oulman, 83, of Owatonna, died Tuesday (Sept. 26, 2006) at Homestead Hospice.

He was born Dec. 5, 1922, in Rock Falls, Iowa, the son of Nathan and Alma (Howe) Oulman. Gene graduated from Mason City High School and went on to graduate from Iowa State University. While at Iowa State, he was enlisted in the U.S. Navy and played college basketball.

He married Violet Willadsen Sept. 30, 1951, in Newell, Iowa. In 1952, the couple moved to Wichita, Kan., where Gene worked for Boeing Aircraft until 1955.

They moved back to Iowa where Gene operated his family’s rental cottages on Clear Lake and worked with his brother at the Clear Lake bowling alley.

In 1961, Gene bought Fairlanes Bowl in Owatonna, operating it until 1969. Gene then managed Sno-Bird Lanes in Northfield and later returned to Fairlanes Bowl working for Gary Staats.

Gene was a member of the American Legion, Elks and Eagles. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed jazz music and carpentry.

He is survived by his wife, Violet Oulman, of Owatonna; daughter, Cristy Huntington, of Owatonna; sons, Thomas Oulman of Owatonna and David (and Amy) Oulman, of Owatonna; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Richard.

Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 30, at Michaelson Funeral Home, 1930 Austin Road in Owatonna, Minn. Burial will be in Owatonna Memorial Gardens.

Visitation will be at from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Michaelson Funeral Home.

Memorials are preferred to Homestead Hospice or the donor’s choice.
