JENNIE P. BARLAS

MASON CITY - Jennie P. BARLAS, 96, of 125 S. Jackson Ave., died Wednesday (Jan. 26, 2000) at the Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, 1311 Second St. S.W., with the Rev. Joseph MIROWSKI officiating. Burial will be in Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City.

Visitation will begin at 4:30 p.m. today at the Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, with a Trisagion service beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of North Iowa or to Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church, in memory of Jennie P. BARLAS.

Jennie P. BARLAS was born Feb. 13, 1903, in Masklina, Greece, the daughter of Gus and Angeline (HOUGIAZOUS) PAPAGEORGE. She married George A. BARLAS in April of 1928 in Chicago, Ill.

Jennie came to the United States on July 4, 1921, with her sister. She lived in Chicago for seven years until her marriage when she and her husband moved to Mason City.

Jennie enjoyed cooking and sewing, gardening and crocheting and she was an avid reader. Most importantly, she loved spending time with her children and grandchildren.

She was a member of the Holy Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church in Mason City.

Survivors include two children, Myrna BARLAS, and Tom BARLAS and his wife, Kathy, both of Mason City; five grandchildren, Johanna and Nico KOTSOPOULOS, both of St. Paul, Minn., George BARLAS, of Mason City, Joanne LANDAU and her husband, Charles, of Waterloo and Tom BARLAS Jr. and his wife, Michelle, of Mason City; one great-granddaughter, Chanel Kathryn BARLAS, of Mason City; two step-great-grandchildren, Blake and Michael LANDAU, both of Waterloo; three sisters, Panagoula KARADONI, of Tripoli, Greece, Chrisanthe THEOPHILOPOULS, of Athens, Greece and Bessie ZEKIOS, of Tripoli, Greece; a special nephew, Harry PAPAGEORGIOU, of Hartford, Conn.; and many nieces and nephews in Greece.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1981; one daughter, Angeline KOTSOPOULOS and her husband, John; one sister and four brothers.

Hogan Bremer Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E. Mason City, is in charge of arrangements.
