MARSHALLTOWN - Romeo G. CALICCHIA, 83, of the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown, died Monday (Jan. 17, 2000) at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Des Moines.

Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery in Mason City, with Jon SCHANK of the Hillside Church of Christ in Marshalltown officiating.

Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. on Thursday at the Iowa Veterans Home Chapel in Marshalltown.

A memorial fund has been established in his name.

He was born Feb. 22, 1916, in Mason City, Iowa, the son of Joseph and Rose (FIA) CALICCHIA where he attended the Mason City Schools. He entered the United States Navy in December 1941, where he worked as a submariner and also became friends with the five SULLIVAN Brothers of Waterloo, Iowa.

Following his honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy, he returned home to the Mason City area and worked as a manufacturer for the Northwestern Cement Plant in Mason City and the Oliver Plant in Charles City. He later moved to the Iowa Veterans Home in Marshalltown where he was employed in the maintenance department for many years.

He was also an avid fan of baseball.

He is survived by one brother, Orlando CALICCHIA; one sister, Yolanda MARINER; one niece, Virginia BLAKESLY; and several other nieces and nephews, all of Mason City.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Edward.
