Mason City man dies in stabbing; Waterloo man charged

MASON CITY — A Waterloo man has been charged with first-degree murder following the stabbing death of a Mason City man early Saturday.

James E[ric]. FARNSWROTH II, 22, is in the Cerro Gordo County Jail on $100,000 bond.

Police found Ian M. DECKER, 24, Mason City, on the ground with a serious stab wound at 2:55 a.m. in the 600 block of East State Street when responding to a report of a stabbing there, according to a news release from the Mason City Police Department.

Officers stopped FARNSWORTH on the east side of town within a few minutes of the call.

DECKER was transported by the Mason City Fire Department to Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, where he later died.

The Mason City Police Department's Criminal Investigation Division, along with the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and the Cerro Gordo County Sheriff's Department were called in to investigate.

Both DECKER and FARNSWORTH knew each other, and the police are not looking for any other suspects in connection to the case, according to the news release.

MASON CITY - Ian M. DECKER, 23, of Mason City died Saturday, April 14, 2012, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa.

A memorial service for Ian will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, April 21, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 302 Fifth Street Southeast, Mason City, with Pastor Dennis GANZ officiating. Inurnment will be held in the Elmwood-St. Joseph Cemetery, Mason City.

A visitation will be held from 3-7 p.m. Friday, April 20, at Hogan Bremer Moore Colonial Chapel, 126 Third St. N.E., Mason City.

Should friends desire, memorials may be designated to the Ian Michael DECKER Memorial Fund in care of his family.

Ian Michael DECKER, the son of Stephen and Gloria HEAGEL DECKER, was born in Mason City on Dec. 2, 1988. He attended and graduated from Mason City High School in 2007 and furthered his education at North Iowa Area Community College. When out of school, Ian held positions at Menards and Taco Tico, most recently taking a position at Advanced Auto in Mason City.

Ian was an exceptional father to his daughter, Cecilia, and she was the love of his life. He spent much of his time with her reading, singing songs and teaching her the "ABCs" and "1,2,3s." His greatest passion was automobiles, especially his Volkswagen Jetta Mark 4 GLI. He would attend car shows and be researching car forums to better himself and his knowledge in the field of auto mechanics. Ian loved music and going to concerts. He was a "techy" who loved his iPod, camera, cell phone and almost all electronics.

In addition to all of his traits, grilling, cooking and smoking meats were something he took pride in. Ian was adventurous, taking trips to the Boundary Waters and his trip to Canada. Spending time with his daughter and friends meant most to him.

Growing up, Ian was a Life Scout in Troop 12 in Mason City where he learned to scuba dive and went on high-adventure treks. He also was an honorable member of the Order of the Arrow. Ian received his black belt in tae-kwon-do.

Ian will be dearly missed by his parents, Stephen DECKER and his fiance, Kim FRANK, and Gloria DECKER and her partner, Ron BOLDING, all of Mason City; daughter, Cecilia DECKER and her mother, Vicky MILLER, Mason City; brother, Tyler DECKER and his girlfriend, Taylor FULLERTON, both of Mason City; sister, Cheri DECKER, Mason City; nephews, Ayden DECKER and Liam DECKER, Mason City; grandparents, June BLANCHARD, Mason City, and Charles DECKER, Flordia; uncles, Mike (Kathy) HEAGEL, Manly; aunts, Christina HEAGEL, Mason City, Darcie (Joe) MITCHELL, Rush City, Minn., and Danica DECKER and her partner Doug, Minnetonka, Minn., along with numerous cousins.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Georgia (SNIDER) DECKER and Emmanuel HEAGEL, and his best friend, Zach WITHAM.
